Alice Cobb from Nottinghamshire is the second new addition to the Matrix Fitness team for 2016. The diminutive climber will joins the squad after another strong season where she’s shown progression in all areas and gained valuable European experience.
“I’m delighted and honoured to be joining Matrix for the forthcoming season” commented Alice. “I’ve followed the team since I began road racing in 2013 and it’s always a team I’ve aspired to ride for. When Stef got in touch and offered me a spot on their roster it was on easy decision. It was watching the 2012 women’s Olympic team pursuit that first inspired me to give racing a try. That team included two Matrix riders, so to now be in the same team as another member of that medal winning trio, Laura Trott, is a huge privilege.”
This season Alice has raced multiple times overseas giving the team an opportunity to watch her race. “It’s clear Alice is a prodigious talent when it comes to climbing, but it’s always important to be confident in your ability to reach the hills in good shape. This season Alice has shown her all round progression to the degree in Belgium she was dictating the pace of flat events. Having seen that there was no questions in my mind about how far she can go in the sport and hopefully we can help her grow further in confidence.” Said team manager Stefan Wyman
Alice’s rapid rise in UCI events over the past two seasons saw her go from a DNF in the Tour of Norway in 2014 to 11th place in the youth classification this year, backed up with 17th in the Tour of Ardeche. Alice also finished very well in the Diamond tour and Trofee Maarten Wynants showing that she can cope in the pan-flat events of Flanders and potentially play a vital team role in races less suited to her natural strengths.
Matrix Fitness have organised a link with a French team to provide opportunities in the French Cup events in 2016. With a team base in Limoux, South West France, in some of the most beautiful and challenging terrain, Alice will have opportunities to race in events that suit her and will provide the right platform from which to progress. All this will take place around her final exams as she has just started her final year at university.
“The wealth of experience and talent in all areas of the team – from management to riders – alongside an amazing support structure means it will be the best place for me to develop and continue my progression within the sport. I’m looking forward to being able to compete in Europe and in particular some French Cup races where I hope to be able to show more of my potential as a climber.” Added Alice
Matrix Fitness will endeavour to help Alice continue her progression, and feel she can be a vital part of a World Tour team in a few seasons. “The prospect of a rider like Alice getting to the bottom of the Mur de Huy in the lead group in a few seasons is a very exciting prospect.” Concluded Wyman
