GP Oostduinkerke came just as the weather in Belgium returned to normal. A cold wind added to the chill with the temperature only 3 degrees. Three Matrix Fitness riders lined up for the race in a peloton of over 70, against riders from TopSport Vlaanderen, Lotto Soudal and Lensworld Zannata.
The riders had a clear plan from the beginning which was bring the race to a sprint and work for the in-form Christina Siggaard. Fresh from her 17th place in the UCI 1.2 ranked Omloop van het Hageland Christina was confident she could bring home a good result for the team.
An early brake gained 30 seconds, but the solo rider wasn’t allowed to escape. An immediate counter attack including the Swedish u23 Champion took a bigger lead, eventually taking 1 minute 15 seconds. With nobody taking up the challenge of bringing the break back, the three matrix riders hit the front and began to reel in the break.
Three laps later and the bunch was back together. Some attempts to break away came to nothing and the race was set up for a bunch sprint, at the end of a 3km straight with a strong tail wind. Around the final slight curve in the road, Christina took to the front and powered to her first win in Belgium, and the first European win of the season on the road. Harriet finished in 19th and Mel in 26th, safely in the peloton having executed the race plan perfectly for the designated leader.
Next up for the team is Cholet, a UCI 1.2 race in Western France, then it’s a return to Belgium for more classic races with Gent Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders and Grand Prix of Dottignies.
