The cycling fraternity was out in force yesterday to support the 2015 launch of the Matrix Fitness Pro cycling team.
The event, held at Staffordshire University, saw the full complement of riders in attendance, along with Team Manager, Stef Wyman, plus representatives from the team’s backers, including title sponsor, fitness equipment supplier, Matrix Fitness.
“We are starting with a fantastic line-up of riders this year,” enthused Wyman.
“Motivation is high as the riders are keen to get out and race and they are all more than ready to take on the challenges ahead. With both experienced riders and new talent on board, I truly believe that we will be able to make our mark in pro territory.
“We’ve upped our game to reflect our new status; adding sports psychology and further nutritional support – courtesy of our new partnership with USN – to our existing roll call of technical partners, and are focusing on more marginal gains this year – the first step in a long-term plan for the team. We’re looking forward to seeing how the season unfolds.”
Following an introduction to each rider, event attendees were given a glimpse into the year ahead for the team, and an exclusive look at Laura Trott’s new custom-finished, team track bike, and road bike from Trek. The audience also had an opportunity to try out the ‘IC7’ – the latest indoor cycling innovation from sponsor, Matrix Fitness, which provides an alternative training resource to the team’s road bikes.
Those interested in the science behind cycling success were able to watch budding talent, Lucy Shaw, being put through her paces by the University’s Sports Science Team, as part of a partnership agreement between the University and Matrix Fitness.
Surprise guest was German cyclist, Jens Voigt; former professional road cyclist who broke the prestigious hour record, completing 51.115km in 60 minutes, before retiring from the sport. Voigt attended the event in support of Trek cycles – suppliers of the team’s road bikes – after riding for UCI Pro Team, Trek Factory Racing.
The riders, who certainly looked the part, sporting both performance and casual clothing from sponsors Milltag and Vulpine respectively, have now departed, en masse, to Belgium, ready to kick off the season with the first of the spring classics – Omloop het Nieuswblad.
2015 team line-up: Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, Lucy Martin, Jessie Walker, Harriet Owen, Lucy Shaw, Sara Olsson, Christina Siggaard, Molly Weaver, Penny Rowson, Mel Lowther.
