In recent years womens cycling has become a much more global sport, with UCI ranked events spreading onto different continents.  2011 see a strong batch of new team to completement the existing structure of team.

The Womens Tour of Qatar is currently running and the men’s race will follow directly after.  It’s great to see organisers like the ASO putting on top class womens events along side men’s events.  These are events we would love to be a part of in the future.

Horizon Fitness RT have a great future when you see these great races around the world, with fantastic winner and champions.

 

 

 

Podium Cafe Blog from the DS

OK, sounds like doom and gloom, and perhaps it is. Sports sponsorship is dominated by 2 thin; Men & TV Coverage. When you compare that to the world of women’s cycling, there’s an obvious problem. More importantly to us is that women’s participation number seem to be outgrowing the men….but investment in women’s racing hasn’t taken off at all.

I’ve been involved in women’s cycling for 7 years now and it’s not the easiest of environments. To get a long term agreement with a sponsor isn’t easy and to catch ‘the big one’ is virtually impossible. This makes keeping riders motivated to stay in the sport harder every year. It would be easy to just give up; I’ve considered it many times (Many, Many Many times). But perhaps it’s by staying involved that will create the stability needed for a few riders to actually fulfill their dreams. That is the motivating factor for sure.

Horizon Fitness RT have now announced their training camp plans with Mpire Cycling Centre in Italy.  These camps will allow others to join us while we training from 2 April 2011.  Anyone wanting more details should contact Jamie Burrow on jamie.mpire@yahoo.co.uk

Claire 24th in Commy Games

Claire Thomas who recently joined Horizon Fitness Racing Team finished 24th in the Commonwealth Games.  It looked like a hard race.  We’ll get some news from Claire when she returns from Delhi.

Sarah Storey, one of the team winning trio in the National Team Pursuit Champs this weekend, has been interviewed ahead of her trip to India as part of the England team for the Commonwealth Games.
