The final day and we had all of our riders on the start. What an achievement for Penny and Britt. Britt has been out of the sport since the end of her junior year with Glandular Fever. 2 years away and on a reduced program this year, she’s managed to fight through. She was also the ‘Lanterne Rouge’, something that we were kind of proud of.
Penny was one of the youngest in the race. Still a junior and therefore on restricted gears, she’d managed to spin her way to the final day at a cadence of around 140. All of the girls started the last day ready for some tough racing and knew what was coming having seen the course from the car.
The stage didn’t start as planned. Annie felt some pain in her knee on the first climb of the day and as a precaution stopped. She was gutted to abandon, but sometimes it’s the only sensible thing to do. She’ll be stronger for the experience and will be back to flight in another race soon. Britt was also suffering and decided to call it a day once she entered the finishing circuits.
However on the positive side, Sarah had continued her rapid progression. She was making progress in the bunch and sitting comfortably in the group as the final circuits started. Alex and Penny put in fantastic rides on the stage. Both gave it everything and both should be really pleased with their rides. They can be confident that if they continue to perform like this, the future holds big results for them. At the head of affairs, Helen was a enjoying another good day at the office. She finished the front group in 23rd. A great ride, solid performances and she managed to pass on a lot of good tips to the other riders.
All that was left for the team was an 8 hour drive home. It’s never much fun, but it’s nice to wake up in your own bed. The school based accommodation for the tour was fine, but simple. The food reflected the accommodation with the high point being the creme brulee. The message of the team had been spread around Limousin. Team fan cards were handed to as many spectators as possible and we completed the tour with smiles on our faces, proud of our performance and ready to take another step forward in the coming races.
